Great Mell Fell

Great Mell Fell is an isolated hill or fell in the English Lake District, north of Ullswater and adjacent to the Eastern Fells. It rises from a level plain to a height of 537 m. Its top is an excellent viewpoint for many of the surrounding higher fells.

Direct Ascent from Old Coach Road
Distance: 2.8km
Difficulty: Moderate
A direct and steeper ascent from the Old Coach Road area on the eastern side. Less defined than other paths but a quicker way to reach the summit with rewarding views of Blencathra and the Northern Fells.

Combined Walk with Little Mell Fell
Distance: 8.5km
Difficulty: Moderate
A longer route combining both Great Mell Fell and nearby Little Mell Fell for a two-summit day. Start at one and walk across the low valley between them to bag both tops.

Great Mell Fell Roadside Parking
Informal roadside parking with space for a handful of cars. No facilities. Be mindful not to block gates or access for local residents.

Public Transport

Public transport is limited. The nearest main hub is Penrith, which has rail and bus services. Taxis or local bus connections may be used to reach Watermillock or the A5091 area.

Good to know

The open nature of Great Mell Fell makes it exposed to wind and weather. Conditions can change quickly despite its low height.
The fell is known for its birdlife and Highland cattle. Keep dogs under close control, especially in spring and lambing season.
Paths may be boggy after rain. Waterproof boots recommended. This is a good hill for families or short walks with broad views.
Great Mell Fell was used for military training during WWII, and remnants like foxholes can still be found.
