The Western Fells

High Crag

744m | 2441ft

High Crag stands at the southern end of the High Stile ridge which divides the valleys of Ennerdale and Buttermere in the west of the English Lake District. It is often climbed as part of a popular ridge walk, from Black Sail youth hostel, or from Buttermere via Scarth Gap.

This route takes you on a scenic circuit starting from Buttermere village, ascending via Scarth Gap Pass, and then climbing High Crag. The descent is via Gamlin End and back to Buttermere.

Weather in the Western Fells can change rapidly, so be prepared for all conditions.
The descent from High Crag via Gamlin End is steep and can be slippery when wet.
